Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
Rapid Relief from Trauma Without Reliving the Pain
When your teen has been through something painful—trauma, grief, panic attacks, or disturbing memories that won't let go—they deserve relief that actually works. At Mindful Healing, we offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a proven approach that helps teens process trauma and distressing memories in as few as 1-5 sessions, often experiencing noticeable relief in just one session.
The best part? Your teen doesn't have to retell traumatic details. They remain in control the entire time. And the results last.
What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a structured, evidence-based therapy that uses guided eye movements and voluntary image replacement to help your teen's brain reprocess distressing memories. Think of it like updating a file on a computer—the facts stay, but the emotional charge and visual triggers are removed.
Your teen will remember what happened, but without the overwhelming fear, sadness, or physical reactions. They'll finally be able to think about the experience without feeling stuck in it.
How Does ART Work?
During an ART session, your teen works with their therapist to:
1. Identify a distressing memory or experience
2. Follow guided eye movements (similar to what happens naturally during REM sleep)
3. Process emotional and physical sensations connected to the memory
4. Replace negative images with positive or neutral ones using their own creativity
This process "updates" how the memory is stored in the brain. The traumatic images lose their power. The emotional intensity fades. And your teen walks away feeling lighter, calmer, and more in control.
What Makes ART Different from Other Trauma Therapies?
You may have heard of talk therapy or trauma-focused CBT. ART shares some similarities but stands out in important ways
Evidence Based Fast Results
1
Most teens see significant improvement in 1-5 sessions. Many experience relief in just one session.
No Need to Recall the Trauma
2
Your teen doesn't have to talk about painful details out loud. They can keep the story private and still heal.
Your Teen Stays in Control
3
Unlike some therapies where processing happens passively, in ART your teen actively directs how they want to "edit" the memory. They're empowered to create their own healing.
Designed to Prevent Overwhelm
4
ART is structured to keep your teen regulated and safe throughout the session. There's no flooding with emotion or spiraling into panic.
Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
ART is effective for teens and young adults struggling with:
• Trauma or PTSD – from abuse, accidents, medical procedures, or witnessing violence
• Anxiety and panic attacks – especially when tied to specific triggers or past events
• School avoidance or stress – when fear or past negative experiences make school feel unbearable
• Depression – particularly when rooted in past painful experiences
• Low self-esteem – negative beliefs about themselves that feel impossible to shake
• Phobias – fear of specific situations, places, or things
• Emotional reactivity – intense emotional responses that feel out of proportion
• Grief and loss – death of a loved one, pet, or major life transition
What to Expect in an ART Session
During an ART session, you'll follow your therapist's hand movements with your eyes, moving back and forth in a smooth, rhythmic pattern. While your eyes are moving, you'll think about the traumatic memory or distressing situation. You'll work through it in short segments, with breaks in between to notice how your body and emotions are shifting.
As your brain processes the memory with eye movements, something changes. The overwhelming feelings start to fade. The physical tension releases. The images that used to haunt you lose their intensity.
We keep going until that memory no longer has power over you. You'll still remember what happened but you'll finally be free from the pain.
Research-Backed and Proven Effective
ART isn't experimental—it's grounded in neuroscience and backed by research. Studies show that ART:
• Delivers rapid and lasting relief from PTSD symptoms
• Reduces anxiety, depression, and grief
• Improves sleep, focus, and overall well-being
• Produces lasting change after treatment is completed
People Love That You Don’t Have to Talk About Your Trauma, especially if that hasn’t helped before
