Parent Coaching: Things You Didn’t Know You Didn’t Know

Most people really don’t get what parent coaching is all about. But it’s simple really… parent coaching helps parents find news ways to manage their family when the old ones are no longer working.

A parent coach will help you respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. You will learn to be more in control of your own emotions which in turn will help change the outcome of some pretty tense situations our teens can lay on us.

A parent coach will help you learn to hear what is not being said rather than overreact to what is being said. In a sense you will develop a “third ear,” when your teen curses at you for example, learning to hear not the angry words, but to identify the pain behind it.

A parent coach will help you to give the right kind of attention to your teen. Too often, our most sincere efforts are experience by our teen as intrusive, or as helicoptering (don’t you just love that phrase?!) or as judgmental. Even praise can be experienced as pressure and it often seems as if we are damned if we do, damned if we don’t. Learning how to really listen, to validate, to express empathy will provide the emotionally safe place your teen craves, a place they truly wish they could find with you.

A parent coach simply helps you take the best parts of you and use them to bring out the best in your teen!
